City Directories and History: HENRY STREET HOUSE
Constructed 1840
“A prosperous commission merchant built this exceptional two-story Greek Revival house in 1840 utilizing the high basement of the previous dwelling on a site that had been destroyed in the 1838 fire. Henry Street doubled the size of the house in 1845 by adding rooms and changing the plan from a single house to a double house. Double parlors open off each other on the east side of the first-floor hall, while a dining room and rear room mark the other side. While such a front-facing Greek Revival house is rare in the strict urban confines of Ansonborough, the Henry Street House has some similarities in its placement and scope of decoration to 64 Hasell Street.”
