City Directories and History: Cape Romain Island, Charleston County, is adjacent to and just south of the above Cape Island. It evidently is named for the entire promontory, since Le Moyne’s Map of 1591 shows “Prom. S. Romano” (and shows it as being north of its present location— possibly this is a cartographical or navigational error). It can be assumed that the name was given by the Spanish in honor of Saint Romano, on whose birthday this cape was discovered. The Spanish were more prone to this type of naming than the French. Cape Romain Island is also part of Raccoon Key, according to the maps in the authors possession.
