City Directories and History: The 1852 Charleston City Directory states that Mr. John Davis owned and lived in this house. He also worked along the wharf near the HCF’s Offices approximately at #40 East Bay. Another source on FB stated, the house was that of, “Home of Samuel Henry Dickson, MD, professor of medicine at Medical College of SC (Now MUSC). Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman to get an MD, lived and studied with Dickson here for a while before entering medical school at Geneva, N.Y.“—————-
Ms. Alice M. Davis of this house, married G. Butler P. Alston of Rock Hill, S.C., (Educator), Captain of Co. B., 6th Regt, S.C. Vol, under Col. John White of Fort Mill. They were married on Jan. 4, 1866 and had one child, Alice. Further, he was a member of the Methodist church of Rock Hill and for nine years was principal-teacher at the Rock Hill Academy. Alice Davis, his sister-in-law, married Rock Hill business leader, James M. Cherry. See link this page.
