50 Laurens Street

City Directories and History: ADAMS-INGRAHAM HOUSE
Constructed 1807-08; restored after fire damage 1974

This dwelling was built after the purchase of a lot from the Gadsden estate, in this case by John Strong Adams, a merchant of Irish extraction. More grandly conceived than the Chancognie residence, the house boasts a period-style fanlighted doorway and marble steps, as well as a notable brick kitchen/carriage house. The third story and the iron fence were added in the antebellum period, probably by the Ingraham family, who owned the property from 1828 until the mid-nineteenth century.

18 – 22 Broad Street or People’s Building

Sholes’ Directory of the City of Charleston – 1882

The Yorkville Enquirer reported on July 6, 1871 – “The capital stock of the People’s National Bank of Charleston has been increased to $1,000,000.”

City Directories and History: PEOPLE’S BUILDING
Constructed 1910-11 Victor Frohling, architect (#’s 18 – 22 Broad Street)

“Mayor R. Goodwyn Rhett, while president of the People’s Bank, spearheaded the construction of the People’s Building as Charleston’s first skyscraper. It stands on the site of a late-eighteenth-century brick double tenement, an indication of the city’s early-twentieth-century progress. Critics then, as now, debated the effect of the eight-story structure on the skyline of the original city. Designed by the New York architect Victor Profiling, the largely yellow brick building has granite rustication on the ground and mezzanine stories and terra cotta ornamentation, now painted with a metallic finish, at the top floor, although a later owner removed the surmounting entablature. Charleston flavor, while the rest of the structure hints at the contemporary national influences. The marble lions flanking the entry, brought from an estate in Massachusetts in the 1950s, are considered landmarks in their own right and were saved from removal by the city’s Board of Architectural Review in 1990.”

12 -16 Broad Street or the Second Bank of the US

City Directories and History: SECOND BANK OF THE UNITED STATES BUILDING
Constructed 1817; addition 1850 (Edward C. Jones, architect)

“This two-story stucco building was erected to house the Second Bank of the
United States, but after that institution’s Pediment of 16 Broad Street closure in 1834, it was acquired by the with gilded eagle Bank of Charleston. The simple Neoclassical facade is accented by a pediment with its original carved and gilded oak eagle. On its interior the main banking room retains its elaborate Rococo Revival plaster cornice. The north wing, designed by Edward C. Jones in 1850, still houses the building’s old boardroom, a splendid space with Italianate and Rococo Revival detailing, including marbleized pilasters supporting an arcaded cove and ceiling. The present bank complex also incorporates several other important buildings including 2 State Street, 14 Broad Street, built in 1799 but twice remodeled; and 12 Broad Street, a circa 1783 structure with a granite, pilastered facade in the Greek Revival style added in 1839.”

Area of #2 – #16 Broad St., in 1888. This was a very important business district for late 19th century merchant bankers.
