City Directories and History: The Pavilion Hotel was heavily promoted in the 1870s and in 2015 remains a lovely piece of Charleston architecture.
The Charleston Dailey News reported on Dec. 24, 1867 – “The pastry cook employed at the Pavilion Hotel was robbed of $52.50 in silver and $65. in greenbacks.”
The Yorkville Enquirer reported on May 9, 1872 – “The ownership of the hotel in Charleston has passed into the hands of Mr. George T. Alford. The well known hostess of the hotel Mrs. Butterfield, died last Thursday.”
The Yorkville Enquirer reported on May 22, 1873 – “In Charleston last Sunday a fire broke out in the Barrett Block opposite the Pavilion Hotel. It originated in the lamp store of J.P. Brown and then spread to adjoining buildings. Businesses damaged include: T. Campbell – An ironware business, C.D. Frank – a shoe and leather store, and John Combings. The Garrack Dramatic Club lost all of their furniture and fixtures.”
The Yorkville Enquirer of Nov. 4, 1891 contained an ad for the Pavilion Hotel. It is recently newly furnished and repainted and is located on King Street next to the Academy of Music. E.T. Gaillard
