City Directories and History: Collins Funeral Home – This house was built by Phineas Thornton in circa 1823, whose family came to
Camden from Massachusetts prior to 1800, on property he bought from Joseph Kershaw. The house originally had wide front steps leading to the second story porch and an open basement but these were remodeled in the early 1880’s. In 1823 Phineas Thornton, “seller of raccoon skins, groceries, etc.” occupied the home. In 1914, A.R. Collins, placed an ad in the paper indicating “Collins Brothers Undertaking for Colored People” was open for business at this location. It has been owned by the Collins family since 1898.
