City Directories and History: 1964 – John G. Richards Jr
Dr. L.H. Deas owned this house in 1823, but it was possibly built earlier by Joseph Kershaw’s son-in-law, Benjamin Perkins. The Charleston “high tide” ground floor was enclosed about 1925. [Courtesy of the Camden Tour Book]
Commonly refereed to as “Shadowlawn,” this house was probably constructed about 1823 for L.H. Deas, a physician. Subsequent owners include Elizabeth Watkins (1869-1903), Edward and Mary Watkins (1903-1925), B.G. and Hattie Sanders (1925-1926), L.B. Whistler (1926-1931), D.L. Maybee (1931-1944), and J.G. Richards 1944-UN). [Camden Archives and Museum]

Please enjoy this structure and all those listed in Roots and Recall. But remember each is private property. So view them from a distance or from a public area such as the sidewalk.
Do you have information to share and preserve? Family, school, church, or other older photos and stories are welcome. Send them digitally through the comments link, so they too might be posted on Roots and Recall. Help preserve our heritage by telling your family’s stories and posting images.
Thanks!
