“Farmers made trips to town on weekends. Camden merchants remained open late Friday and Saturday nights, the streets illuminated by gas lamps. Some merchants also operated on Sunday mornings, and in fact, since many store owners or managers lived on the premises, some opened at any hour to accommodate arriving customers. Camdens merchants included those from a sizable Jewish community as well as black businessmen. Marion H. Heyman recalled that the following were leading merchants: Tom Arrants; Baum Brothers (Herman and Mannes);G. C. Bruce; James Burns; H. G. Garrison (later Rhame Brothers); Eugene Dibble; William Geisenheimer; Hirsh Brothers; A. D. Kennedy; John Man; John T. Nettles Sr.; Springs, Heath, and Shannon; M. Tobin; English Vaughan; Paul Villepigue, S. M. Wilson; Adolph Wittkowsky; David Wolfe; George Young; F.
