A Happy Holiday Season To All
In October of this past year, a R&R user contacted the website, to say she was cleaning out her home, in preparation for a retirement move. She asked if R&R could assist in finding a home for a family bible, the Albergotti’s. She had acquired the book through the purchase of a home in Blacksburg, S.C. — it had been passed around among her family members for decades and she felt it was time to put it with the original family. She had researched R&R and seen where the history of a part of the historic Albergotti family was recorded. Thus she contacted us.
It just so happens one of the co-founders has a connection to the family in question. Within fifteen minutes of receiving the inquiry, R&R had located the appropriate descendent, to eventually receive the gift. He was truly appreciative and excited. Along with the Bible, the donor also supplied R&R with a number of her own family images and histories from the Cherokee County area for posting. Some of these now appear on the Cherokee County website. Since that time, numerous additional collections have been provided R&R for inclusion on the Cherokee County site. It has thus grown to be one of R&R most used.
When R&R began nearly four years ago, this is just how its founders envisioned the preservation of local history. Besides this contact, another individual from Atlanta also requested R&R’s assistance in documenting a home in Newberry County, S.C. After examining the home, we were able to pinpoint its construction as ca. 1840, not the late 19th century as he had been informed!

R&R’s commitment to preservation and helping communities keep their local historic collections intact, has been very rewarding during 2016. Just in the past thirty days over 15,000 pages have been read. The website was also used as a part of a recent fund raising tour program of historic sites in Union County, S.C. The Sunday afternoon tour of historic homes resulted in the nearly five hundred website hits. Clearly other communities should be utilizing the website as a means of providing community information to their visistors and audiences. R&R was pleased to provide this free community service to bring history to life. Having helped dozens of individuals save a part of their local history, makes the experience, even more rewarding. So, remember R&R does enjoy digitizing memorabilia and then passing it on to the appropriate institution for preservation, let us help you and your community preserve and share your stories. The volunteers and founders of Roots and Recall look forward to continuing the practice of Preservation Through Sharing.
