City Directories and History: “William Waterhouse built this residence in 1898 as a wedding present to his wife. The two-story frame house was built with the narrow end facing the street and long piazzas overlooking the yard. Built on a raised foundation of approximately three feet, the Victorian Period house sits unobtrusively between the Lewis Reeve Sams House (38BU1038) built in 1852 and the Hepworth-Pringle House (38BU1036) built ca. 1720. Windows are two over two (2/2) lights with exterior blinds. The entrance is flanked by sidelights and a rectangular transom. The double piazzas (the second floor was added later) are supported by round columns and a simple balustrade.
William Waterhouse was the son of George Waterhouse, who bought the Lewis Reeve Sams house in 1869. The elder Waterhouse came to Beaufort from Kennybunkport, Maine, in 1864 to open a general store on Bay Street.”
