Anderson College had its origins when Dr. William B. Johnson was made Chancellor of a school promote by local Baptists. This institution was Johnson’s Female University. This was the forerunner of Anderson College, which was later built at the present site in 1911-12, with local contributions of $100,000. Anderson College, now a university, opened its doors at this location on Sept. 12, 1912, and for many years was strictly a girls college. Courtesy of Anderson Heritage, Inc. – 1986
The first full time Pres. of the College was Rock Hill’s Dr. James P. Kinard, who later returned to Rock Hill to become the President of Winthrop College.
The wing of the main hall was used by the first radio station, WAIM. It was owned by Mr. Earle Hall. Mr. Hall’s daughter, Mittie would often invite her friends, including my own mother Martha Buice, to attend performances taking place at the radio’s studio. (Recollections of MBF – 1988)
