History and City Directories:
Little Mountain Presbyterian Church was located 10 miles northwest of Abbeville on SC Hwy. 28. This spot was one of the Rev. John Harris’ preaching station at the time of the American Revolution, and the first building was a log structure which was used until 1800. It was, according to tradition, located “on the summit of ‘Little Mountain,’ a high knoll” about a quarter of a mile in the rear of the current location.
By 1805, it was moved to the road where a second log church was built. A third building, of rectangular frame construction (30′ by 50′) served the congregation from 1859 to 1920. The building became dilapidated and was rebuilt and enlarged with a wing and belfry added. It was a “T” shaped wooden structure (70′ by 50′) with 13 rectangular windows with triangle tops. It had a bell tower, but no bell. In 1939, the Rev. John R. Hooten, Jennings Ave., Greenwood, and served as its pastor since 1928, and its membership was about 130.
