City Directories and History: “Calhoun Falls, named for the Calhoun family and the falls, found in nearby Savannah River, was chartered on January 9, 1908. The present owner of most of this property is Duke Power Company. The name of Millwood Plantation is believed to be derived from the grits and corn mill located on the property.
Calhoun Falls, named fro the Calhoun family and the falls, found in nearby Savannah River, was chartered on Jan. 9, 1908. For many years a single cotton mill was the town’s main industry, but several other industrial plants have moved into the area within the last twenty years, the largest being a subsidiary of Burlington Industries. Probably the oldest house in the town is the home presently owned by S. F. Sherrard, Sr., near the southwest comer of SC-81 and SC- 72. This house was built by Granville Beale, of Massachusetts, the husband of one -of the Calhoun heirs.
Buck Nellie—Cherryville, the black section of Calhoun Falls, bears the name of Buck Nellie, origin of the name unknown to the author. It is origin of this name unknown also. According to the late “Marse” Henry Hester, a well-versed historian of the area, Cherryville Post Office was located in a small store on the present site of the house built by the late Oscar Ellison,3Hester Station Community, a station stop for the C&WC, just south of Calhoun Falls, was named for the Hester family, who were large land owners in the area. Senator Lawrence Hester is the best-known contemporary member of this family. long-time principal of the black grammar school serving the Calhoun Falls area until the systems were consolidated.”
