City Directories and History: The Edwards – Clark House: In an article in the ARP of October 7, 1842, R. M. Stevenson, who edited the paper, wrote about Due West when he was a student at Erskine in 1879. He noted that the house occupied in 1942 by Miss Lola Bell was, in 1879, the home of Dr. E. Hyatt Edwards, (1833–1901). Edwards arrived in Due West in 1874. He notably practiced medicine in York County (Rock Hill) and was a member of the Neely’s Creek ARP Church. In Due West he was listed as an M.D. but was a practicing druggist. Ware, A Place, 122, 125 Note – Edwards may have purchased the house from Captain Pratt or he may have rented it from Mr. Power.
Currently owned by Dr. John Carson, this home was, for many decades, the home of Miss Lola Bell who took in boarders. Miss Lola Bell would take care of individuals whose homes burned without being compensated and housed generations of student and faculty borders. Pratt purchased the house from the Lindsay family who built it, and in 1873, two years after he added the second story (when he also built a large adjoining building for boarders), he advertised the home for sale. Either then or later the home was purchased by the Power family and later by the Bell family. See Ware, 117. Notes from the Progress of Improvement in Our District – James Gettys, 2018
