South Fork Trestle Collapses
The Yorkville Enquirer reported on Nov. 29, 1877 – “about an accident which occurred on Friday, Nov. 24 on the CCC railroad. The trestle over the South Fork Creek had been weakened by recent flooding and gave way about 4 pm on the afternoon when a whole train of cars fell into the creek. This is about ten miles south of Rock Hill. There were twenty passengers in three cars involved. Hundreds of local residents gathered to help. When word reached Rock Hill about 100 men both white and colored left in box cars to help with the rescue. The passengers tried to escaped through windows and some were lodged in trees down stream or on trestle timbers. Several were rescued and taken to local homes. Dr. J.W. Fewell and Dr. R.M. Williamson of Rock Hill went to provide medical aid. One rescuer, John G. Steele of Rock Hill sustained a serious knee injury.”
The Rock Hill Herald reported on Oct. 29, 1885 – “Mr. John G. Steele and his son, have established a kennel for the breeding and training of pointer dogs on their farm near Rock Hill. It will run in connection of breeding thoroughbred horses.”
