City Directories and History: This early Fairfield County home was originally that of Morris – Free or Frees. It was later purchased by a Dr. McCants and it was under that name that the Fairfield County Sketchbook recorded the home. The home featured beautifully crafted diamond shaped brick diapering in the large end chimney.
This is indeed one of Fairfield County’s oldest dwelling and in 1983 was captured by the crew surveying the county’s historic inventory. Enjoy seeing the images below that show how this 18th century home survived until the late 20th century, well over two hundred years. Unfortunately, the lovely 18th century mantel which graced the inside of the home, was heavily damaged by a fire but remains a masterpiece of carved beauty with egg and dart design, sunbursts and a arched opening. Reported to have been owned by James Morris (1800-1820’s) whose family resided here until the Civil War.
R&R was informed that this old home was dismantled and moved to Mecklenburg County, S.C.
