The Yorkville Enquirer reported on Oct. 9, 1889 – “Reese and Black have begun work on a new livery station on Church Street. They have also bought the old livery on Shelby Street from the Carroll family and have torn it down.” Later on Sept. 17, 1890 the paper reported that, “Black, Reese and Co., will add another story and a Mansard roof to the brick hotel on Main Street, resulting in a total of 55 bedrooms. Mr. Perkins, architect of the Blacksburg Land and Improvement Company is drawing the plans.”
City Directories and History: 1958 – Lee J. Roberts,
The Sallie Lucas Home, is one of Blacksburg’s first and finest houses, being built in 1885. In the 1890’s, the home was purchased by M.R. Reese, a real estate agent from Georgia. Reese’s daughter would marry into the Roberts family, one of the first families to move to Blacksburg. The home remained in the
Roberts family until the 1950’s when it was sold to Mrs. Francis Tinsley who was the widow of Dr. J.E. Tinsley, a local druggist in the town. After Mrs. Tinsley’s death in 1989, her unmarried daughter, Francis, lived in the home until her death in 2013. In early 2014, the home was sold back into the Roberts family and is currently under renovation. One of the items R&R hopes they will restore is the placement of the stained glass door, currently in storage, which would clearly enhance the original architectural elements of the home.
The Yorkville Enquirer reported on June 6, 1894 – “Mr. W.A. Jackins has purchased the new and elegant residence on Lime Street recently built by Mr. M.R. Reese.”
The YV Enquirer reported on Sept. 19, 1894 – “Mr. M.R. Reese has begun the erection of another cottage at the corner of Shelby and Lime Streets.”
