“Just another of Camden’s magnificent antebellum mansions.”

Charles John Shannon House – Charles John Shannon built his Log Town plantation on thirteen acres. The residence was probably designed by a master builder, one of the artisans who at that time functioned as architects. The house is an excellent example of Classic Revival and is recorded in the Historical American Building Survey in the Library of Congress. Some of the original outbuildings, such as the smoke house and the dairy, are located behind the house. “Farmers made trips to town on weekends. Camden merchants remained open late Friday and Saturday nights, the streets illuminated by gas lamps. Some merchants also operated on Sunday mornings, and in fact, since many store owners or managers lived on the premises, some opened at any hour to accommodate arriving customers. Camdens merchants included those from a sizable Jewish community as well as black businessmen. Marion H. Heyman recalled that the following were leading merchants: Tom Arrants; Baum Brothers (Herman and Mannes);G. C. Bruce; James Burns; H. G. Garrison (later Rhame Brothers); Eugene Dibble; William Geisenheimer; Hirsh Brothers; A. D. Kennedy; John Man; John T. Nettles Sr.; Springs, Heath, and Shannon; M. Tobin; English Vaughan; Paul Villepigue, S. M. Wilson; Adolph Wittkowsky; David Woolfe (Wolfe); George Young; F. Leslie Zemp; and Zemp and DePass Druggists.” (Information courtesy of A History of Kershaw County, S.C. by Joan A. Inabinet and L. Glenn Inabinet, 2001 – The Un. of S.C. Press)
