“A beautiful heritage gardening and historic site.”
City Directories and History: Horse Branch Hall – This impressive dwelling was built about 1840 by Mrs. Isabel Scota McRae in the Classic Revival style of the early 19th century. Typical features are the double stairway to the porch and the above-ground basement which is now converted to living quarters. John McRae, an engineer, designed the terraced gardens along with a conduit system which supplied the house and gardens with water pumped from nearby Horse Branch Creek. Note the black and white images are from the Historic America Building Survey files taken in circa 1960. This is clearly one of American’s premier dwellings as recognized by the HABS project.

Please enjoy this structure and all those listed in Roots and Recall. But remember each is private property. So view them from a distance or from a public area such as the sidewalk or public road.
Do you have information to share and preserve? Family, school, church, or other older photos and stories are welcome. Send them digitally through the “Share Your Story” link, so they too might be posted on Roots and Recall.
Thanks!
